This is such a good idea to organize makeup inside birchboxes! I could actually find things

I love me some monthly makeup subscriptions! An unforeseen and unfortunate consequence of getting ipsy and birchbox samples for a few months was that I was drowning in makeup! Seriously, I couldn’t find anything. Because I couldn’t find anything, I’d use the same makeup every day. What’s the fun of having a bunch of new makeup you never use, right? I had to get all this makeup under control and organized.

Everyone’s favorite Alex dupe is this recollections drawer system, but it’s still pretty spendy. I waited for a storage sale at Michael’s and paired that deal with a coupon to get the best discount possible.

Where to Start

To start organizing, I dumped every single sample, brush and bobby pin onto the floor of my closet. I sorted every item into one of four general categories: hair, eyes, face & lips. As I was sorting, I tossed everything that was broken or wayyyyy too old.

By the way, did you know that most makeup has a recommended expiration? Look for this symbol which usually contains the number of months you should keep the item after opening.

Divide Makeup into Categories

I dedicated each drawer to a different category. To keep everything from becoming a jumbled mess again, I used the birchboxes as trays. I tried to give each box a subcategory to give the system some sense. This makes it easier to maintain and much easier to find exactly what I’m looking for. As an added perk, the birchboxes were FREE!

The top drawer is for hair products.
My second most used products are eyeshadow and eyeliner, so I keep those in the next drawer.
In the third drawer, I keep face products.
The fourth drawer is where I keep all my lippies.

I really didn’t think everything was going to fit into only five drawers, but after I had it all organized, I was pleasantly surprised when I had a full drawer left over for my hair tools. I might end up stowing these somewhere else, but for now this is as good a place as any.

Now that I have my makeup organized, it is so much easier to find what I’m looking for. I live for eyeshadow, and I am way more likely to reach for new and different colors now that I can actually find them! Isn’t trying new things the fun of wearing makeup? It always feels good to organize the areas I see every day, and starting my day by looking at my clean, organized makeup really starts me off on the right foot.
